Liverpool news LIVE Naby Keita

Having spent last summer chasing the RB Leipzig midfielder, a fee in the region of £48m was finally agreed to bring the Guinea global to Anfield at the end of the 2017/18 season.

The 22-year-old Guinean will join the Reds for £51m in July, in a deal agreed last August, but the Reds wanted to bring him in this month instead.

Naby Keita is reportedly on the verge of being unveiled as a Liverpool player, even though he is not due to sign until the summer. "A sale [in January] would have only been possible if we had secured an additional, exorbitantly high transfer fee".

The Liverpool Echo says Reds sporting director Michael Edwards has held initial talks with Leipzig counterpart Ralph Rangnick over the issue.

However, rumours of the move being pushed forward to this month have hit the headlines in the days since Philippe Coutinho left Liverpool for Barcelona in a £142m deal.

Despite Leipzig publicly insisting Keita will not be allowed to leave early, reports that the Bundesliga club are more open to the idea behind closed doors.

In a tweet, the club said "OFFICIAL: Naby Keïta will remain an RBLeipzig player until 30th June 2018".

Some Liverpool fans were sold false hope on Saturday when Naby Keita's muted celebration hinted at an early exit - in the eyes and minds of supporters getting far too carried away.

Liverpool play Manchester City in a few hours and Jurgen Klopp will be focusing on the huge clash before he turns his attention back to how he intends to proceed this season.
