The tunnel, which the army said belonged to the Hamas terror group that controls the Gaza Strip, ran underneath the Kerem Shalom Gaza crossing, as well as below major gas and diesel pipelines, spokesperson Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus told reporters Sunday. The attack was carried out on Saturday, when the Israeli jets bombed an area that was situated at the east of the southern town of Rafah, and it was witnessed by various residents of Gaza. There were no casualties.

IDF soldiers were busy on Shabbos as they were preparing to destroy another terrorist tunnel from Gaza to Israel that was Baruch Hashem detected by Israel. Israel shut down the crossing as a result until further notice.

The existence of tunnels used to smuggle terrorists into Israel was revealed in the initial days of the 2014 war between Hamas and Israel.

This is the third demolition by the IDF in recent weeks of a tunnel that reaches into Israel. But Conricus said this did not mark "more of the same" since it involved the most advanced technological means Israel has deployed.

Hamas initially said a typical smuggling tunnel was destroyed, but had no immediate response to the Israeli announcement. "Hamas needs to understand that these attacks will continue". We are responding to aggression against the State of Israel and are taking vigorous and systematic action against hostile infrastructures.

"Destroying the network of offensive tunnels is an essential component in our policy of systematically damaging the strategic abilities of Hamas".

He didn't specify which tools were used, but in the past Israel has said its new system involves combat units, military intelligence, logistics and research to destroy the tunnels.

According to military correspondent Yossi Yehosua, the Hamas tunnel has been newly dug, and not yet in use.

"We call on the Egyptian authorities to open an urgent investigation into this incident", spokesman Iyad al-Bozum said in a statement.
