Trump's confusing, contradictory performance at a public immigration debate

Trump opens curtain on negotiations over spending bill, immigration

President Donald Trump held a rare open meeting with lawmakers on immigration policy in the Cabinet Room of the White House on Tuesday allowing the press to watch legislative sausage being made firsthand

"Seems to me that Democrats are holding that deal hostage for a DACA negotiation and we are meeting at the White House tomorrow on a bipartisan basis with the President to see what that might look like", said Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn.

Tuesday's decision is the latest in a monthslong battle surrounding DACA, one that has pitted Democrats in Congress against Republican lawmakers who say the program is an overreach of power.

But since the Dems are going to the wall to get DACA approved, Trump upped the stakes when he demanded other immigration enforcement measures be included along with DACA legislation, including funding for the president's border wall - a provision that enrages the Dems base as much as not getting DACA illegals legalized. He added, however, that both parties should pass a "bill of love" to ensure Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program recipients continue to be protected, while also ensuring national security. That judge also said that lawyers have a strong chance of succeeding at trial as the underlying case is still playing out.

Trump allowed cameras and media to watch the discussion for almost an hour.

"It's an incentive for people to do a good job, if you want to know the truth", Trump said.

"It was like being in a 9th grade civics class", the source said. President Donald Trump took to Twitter Wednesday to express his thoughts on the ruling. Sen.

"My position is going to be what the people in this room come up with", he said. "Because I respect them".

In the end, Trump landed on a negotiation strategy: Let the lawmakers do it. DACA has protected about 800,000 people from deportation - including many who were brought to the US illegally as children.

Republicans had a meeting among themselves on Capitol Hill last night with Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen that went relatively well, according to the source.

Trump also said he hoped to pursue a "comprehensive" immigration bill after lawmakers strike a deal on the dreamers. "If they come to me with things not in love with I'm going to do it". That's an argument GOP lawmakers who want a deal are making to Trump to convince him he has maximum leverage now that will wane. The order allowed certain people, called Dreamers, who came to the USA illegally as minors to be protected from immediate deportation.

Ahead of a bipartisan meeting at the White House Tuesday, the question is becoming whether Democrats can accept some version of a wall (albeit they'd call it something else) in exchange for protections for those who are eligible for DACA.

"It's about expanding political power, especially for the Democrats".

Pennsylvania Rep. Lou Barletta praised Trump's initial decision to rescind the DACA protections set forth by the Obama administration.
