Mom, boyfriend sought in burning, beating death of 4-year-old girl

Candice Diaz 24 is wanted for murder and torture charges in the death of her 4-year-old daughter

Sumpter Township police are searching for the parents of a 4-year-old girl who died New Year's Day with severe burns on her extremities, officials said.

Candice Renea Diaz, 24, the child's mother, as well as Diaz's boyfriend, 28-year-old Brad Edward Fields, are charged in an arrest warrant approved by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office with murder, child abuse and torture, reports CBS Detroit. Police say they are believed to be driving a black 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier with MI plates DTR1854.

A postmortem uncovered signs of Battered Child Syndrome, denoting the girl had likely suffered egregious abuse for an extended period of time.

Officers arrived and found the girl's family members administering CPR, police said.

The girl, identified as Gabby Barrett by Detroit Fox affiliate WJBK, was taken to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, where she was pronounced dead. Once there, cops reportedly found Diaz in distress and a dog suffering from a gunshot wound, according to the report. Fields also has been charged as a habitual offender.

Police say Fields ran away from the home.

Brad Fields, 28, faces murder, child abuse and torture charges in the death of Gabrielle Barrett on January 1, 2018.

Three days later, Diaz went to the police department to say she no longer wanted to press charges against Fields for assault, according to a police report.

Barrett spoke to WJBK about his daughter Sunday night at a candlelight vigil held in her memory.

Mugshots released Monday by Sumpter Township police officials appear to stem from charges filed against both Fields and Diaz following that incident. She pleaded guilty to weapons charges and received probation.
