4 policemen killed in 1st J&K IED blast in 3 years
Four policemen killed in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast in Sopore of Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district.
The otherwise busy market was closed for the day in response to a shutdown called by the separatists to mark the 19th anniversary of the killings of some 55 people following a militant attack on security forces in 1993.
The deceased have been identified as ASI Irshad Ahmad (Executive Police 825685) of Doda, Constable Ghulam Nabi (720/IRP 3rd) of Rohama Rafiabad, Constable Parvaiz Ahmad (915/IRP 3rd) of Vilgam Handwara, Constable Mohammad Amin (470/IRP 3rd) of Sogam Kupwara.
Witnesses said the powerful blast near Gole Market ruptured bodies of the slain policemen, destroyed five shops, and partially damaged three other shops.
Inspector General of Police Kashmir, Munir Khan, who rushed to the town immediately, told media persons that it was after three years that an IED attack had been carried out in Kashmir.
Sources said the IED was planted beneath a shop by the militants and detonated through remote control. The attack targeted a patrol unit of the police in the main market in Sopore.
The outfit in a media communiqué claimed that they have attacked the forces party in Sopore.
Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti while expressing her grief over the killings tweeted: "Pained to hear that four policemen have been killed in an IED explosion in Sopore". "May the four fearless J&K police personnel killed in the line of duty today rest in peace", Abdullah tweeted. Reinforcements have also been rushed to augment the forces on ground to hunt down the militants.
