Indian Medical Association calls for 12-hour shutdown of private hospitals over NMC Bill 2017

Indian Medical Association calls for 12-hour shutdown of private hospitals over NMC Bill 2017

In Bengaluru, around 200 medical students under the Karnataka Medical Students and Youth Doctors Association gathered on Monday to hold a protest.

Clause 49 of the Bill calls for a joint sitting of the National Medical Commission, the Central Council of Homoeopathy and the Central Council of Indian Medicine at least once a year "to enhance the interface between homoeopathy, Indian Systems of Medicine and modern systems of medicine".

The nationwide protest called on Tuesday by the IMA against a new bill seeking to replace the MCI with a new body left many patients in the lurch, as doctors stayed off duty across the state.

"It removes all regulations that were in place before a medical college starts functioning".

There is also a strong resentment against the examination that will be conducted by the NMC for medical students after completion of the course to be eligible as practising doctors. "Talks are on. We have heard them and also presented our views".

"We are giving moral support to the strike as we agree that NMC Bill is not in the favour of the medical profession".

Bill, which was tabled at the Indian parliament last week, is likely to come up for discussion on Tuesday.

Intending to make sure transparency, the bill also looks for to allow practitioners of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy, to practice contemporary medicine formerly they complete a short-term "bridge" course.

The former president of IMA Dr KK Aggarwal had urged the government to redraft the Bill and rectify some of its provisions to protect the interest of the medical practitioners."The Bill takes away the voting right of every doctor in India to elect their medical council", he opined.

He said the bill should be submitted before the selection committee for scrutiny. He said that the new proposal in the bill is not acceptable to them. Senior doctors from IMA are protesting another proposal of NMC which allows unrestricted fee in 60 per cent of medical seats in private medical colleges.

No permission would be needed to add new seats or to start post-graduate courses, it says.
