That's what they told police officers anyway, when they were busted with the drugs during a routine traffic stop in Nebraska, according to WSMV. Canine units were called and deputies found 60 pounds of high-grade marijuana. Patrick Jiron was placed in York County Jail, but his wife Barbara was not due to a medical issue, USA Today reported.
"They said the marijuana was for Christmas presents", Lt. Paul Vrbka of the York County Sheriff's Department said.
Altogether, the street value of the seized marijuana was reportedly about $336,000, Vrbka told the York News-Times. The couple said they planned to "distribute the marijuana to family and friends as Christmas gifts". They were simply spreading holiday cheer, they told authorities. Nebraska punishes possession of up to one ounce with a $300 citation but the sale of any amount is a felony. No set court date for the Jirons has yet been reported. The traffic violation was what prompted authorities on duty near the town of Bradshaw to pull the driver over, but they immediately sensed something was amiss.
The married couple was driving around with 60 pounds of the loud, according to the York News Times. On July 1, Nevada joined seven other states allowing recreational marijuana use and became the first of four states that voted to legalize recreational sales in November's election to allow dispensaries to sell cannabis for recreational use to anyone over 21.
