Donald Trump, Theresa May try to thaw frosty relations after Twitter storm

The Palestinian government slammed as "unacceptable" Monday a U.S. veto of a draft United Nations resolution against President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said that the resolution reflects the global community's rejection to U.S. President Donald Trump's decision that aims at changing the status of Jerusalem.

14 out of 15 members in the UNSC voted in favor of the resolution which opposed the recognition of Jerusalem city as the capital of Israel. "It won't be forgotten", US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said after the vote, adding that it was the first veto cast by the US in more than six years.

U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley's veto highlighted Washington's isolation over Trump's announcement.

"The United States will not be told by any country where we can put our embassy", she said after the veto.

Haley called the resolution and the votes for it "an insult".

A spokesman for the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, responded to the veto by saying it was "unacceptable and threatens the stability of the worldwide community because it disrespects it".

US President Donald Trump revealed his new strategic plan noting that for many generations, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been interpreted as the main factor preventing peace in the region.

Trump abruptly reversed decades of United States policy this month when he recognised Jerusalem as Israel's capital, generating outrage from Palestinians and the Arab world and concern among Washington's western allies. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement and other groups organized mass protests while its rival, the Gaza-based Islamic militant group Hamas, has called for a third violent uprising against Israel.

Trump's decision to move the USA embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem was a sovereign decision and "fully in line" with previous Security Council resolutions, Haley added. The Palestinians want East Jerusalem, now occupied by Israel, as the capital of their future independent state.

Resolutions presented to the council require nine votes for adoption, but the United States - along with Britain, China, France and Russian Federation - have the power to veto any measure.

This has infuriated the Palestinians and Arab countries, which have strongly protested against the US move.

Every Jew on earth - in fact, every decent person on earth - should be applauding the fact that President Trump called out the decades-long charade - and failure - of the Middle East "peace process".

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a video on his Twitter account in which he thanked Haley for the U.S. veto.

"You lit a candle of truth".

Following the USA block on the U.N. resolution, a spokesman for Erdogan said that the annulment of Trump's decision would be sought in the U.N. General Assembly.

In Netanyahu's words, "One defeated the many, truth defeated lies".
