NYPD says it's responding to a report of an explosion in Manhattan

NYPD: Responding to report of Times Square area explosion

Major streets are closed and subway service changes are in effect following an underground explosion near Port Authority area in New York City.

The blast happened on Monday morning in an underpass at the Port Authority Bus Terminal near Times Square.

Authorities did not immediately comment on Ullah's motives.

- Ullah lives in Brooklyn and is of Bangladeshi descent, two law enforcement sources said. Ullah was taken into custody and was moved to Bellevue Hospital with non-life-threatening wounds and burns.

Despite it being rush-hour at the time of the explosion, only three people suffered minor injuries.

Four people were injured, including the suspect, 27-year-old Akayed Ullah, according to the New York Fire Department.

The 27-year-old man believed to have set off a pipe bomb in the New York City subway came to the United States from Bangladesh seven years ago with a type of preferential visa for people with relatives who are USA citizens or permanent residents, according to the Associated Press, citing sources. All of the injuries were non-life-threatening, according to the Fire Department of NY.

- "I did it for the Islamic State", Ullah told investigators, according to the federal complaint.

President Donald Trump has been briefed on the situation, so far the White House has not released a statement.

- Alan Butrico owns a residential building next door to the building where he says Ullah and his family live.

The AP reports, "Law enforcement official tells AP that man had explosive device strapped on when it exploded in New York City subway".

The New York Police Department said in its official Twitter feed that there was an explosion of unknown origin and that some subway train lines were being evacuated.

"Through incredibly good fortune, his bomb did not seriously injure anyone other than himself", acting US Attorney for the Southern District Joon Kim said Tuesday. "It was scary. It was just a lot of chaos but I didn't see any injuries".

- Cuomo said it was an amateur, "effectively low-tech device".

Eight people were killed and several wounded in Manhattan when Sayfullo Saipov rented a pickup truck and ploughed into cyclists and pedestrians in October.

The incident comes a few weeks after a deadly terror attack in Lower Manhattan.
