Google Assistant lands on older Android phones

Google Storyboard app main

However, the assistant, known mostly for its ability to provide on-the-fly information and not necessarily its wit as is the case with Apple's Siri, has been limited as far as its availability goes.

Google is now rolling out the voice-based virtual assistant to smartphones running Android 5.0 Lollipop. And for Android Lollipop smartphone users, Google is rolling out the update in two languages- English and Spanish. You'll soon be able to find it on any tablet running Android Marshmallow or Android Nougat. Coming to Android Nougat (7.0 and 7.1) this did see an increase and now stands at 23.3 percent of the market, while Android 6.0 Marshmallow still has 29.7 per cent market share. The voice assistant also learns the more you interact with it and will eventually offer you more functionality. Google also notes that Assistant on a tablet will be ideal to control smart devices like plugs and lights or ask about the weather. The tablet updates are being rolled out during "the coming week". Talking about the tablets, the Google Assistant still lacks the support for Android 5.0 Lollipop.

Another cool (for some, it may be creepy) aspect of Google Assistant is that it listens to every conversation you make on the phone. The new set of Google Apps are also created to cater to the needs of first-time users. While the Assistant was made available for smartphones running Android 6.0 Marshmallow in February this year, it is now hitting those running Android 5.0 Lollipop. Once users update to latest version of Google Play Services, they will see an Assistant app icon in their "All apps" list.
