Saquon Barkley finishes fourth in Heisman Trophy voting
On Saturday night, Mayfield took a very big step toward another kind of history, the type that would have seemed so unlikely when he first walked on in Lubbock four years ago: He's become an all-time college football great.
Mayfield won college football's most prestigious individual honor in a landslide over runner-up Bryce Love of Stanford and last year's Heisman victor, Lamar Jackson of Louisville.
Baker Mayfield's incredible 2017 season was recognized with college football's highest individual honor Saturday night. He is the first senior to win the award since Troy Smith of Ohio State in 2006. Mayfield is the 7th player to ever be a finalist three times. His 203.8 pass efficiency rating also led all FBS passers.
This season, Mayfield has passed for 4,340 yards with 41 touchdowns and just five interceptions, and he has rushed for 310 yards and five more scores.
The Oklahoma quarterback topped off a week for the ages in which he also won both the Maxwell Award and the Walter Camp Award as college football's most outstanding player in 2017, the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback of the Year Award and the Associated Press Player of the Year Award. Mayfield's performance, however, continues to be otherworldly and, without question, Heisman-worthy.
Mayfield, who finished third in the Heisman voting a year ago, leads the nation in completion percentage (.710), yards per pass attempt (11.8), yards per completion (16.6) and pass of plays of 20-plus yards (75).
Mayfield is no stranger to controversy, but you can't deny the impact he made on the field this season. The second-ranked Sooners meet No. 3 Georgia in the Rose Bowl on January 1. Mayfield will forever be mentioned alongside legends of the game, as he's become one himself in an unlikely journey from walk-on to Heisman victor.
