Storm Caroline to bring snow and 80mph winds to the UK

Weather alert: snow and Storm Caroline heading for Ireland

"A spell of heavy snow is possible over some central parts of the United Kingdom during Sunday", reports the Met Office.

"During Friday, increasingly frequent snow showers already affecting parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England will extend across many other northern and western parts of the United Kingdom", said the Met Office.

The Met Office has a yellow "be aware" warning in force from 00:05 GMT on Friday to 18:00 on Saturday.

Met Office predictions don't now show snow for London on Monday as their forecast doesn't quite go that far.

"At the moment we have a yellow weather warning in place, but it could be upgraded to amber".

A weather warning for snow and ice has been issued for Wales later this week.

Caroline, the third named storm of the year, is also expected to cause power cuts and bring large waves to coastal routes, seafronts and coastal communities in northern Scotland.

There will be potentially damaging gusts of up to 80mph there, with higher speeds possible across the Northern and Western Isles.

"This could lead to road, rail and air travel delays, with the potential for vehicles to become stranded or public transport to be cancelled". Some short term loss of power and other services is possible.

Britain faces a -16C shiver from Siberia - as a colder-than-normal December was predicted by the Met Office winter forecast.

However, before the snow the county is expecting to be hit by the tail end of Storm Caroline.

Across the United Kingdom, conditions will start to turn wet and blustery overnight, especially across the North and North West, with strong winds expected early on Thursday.

Ex-BBC and Met Office forecaster John Hammond said: "Much colder easterlies could arrive, meaning a predominantly chilly run-up to Christmas".

Snow and falling temperatures are also forecast for parts of Britain later in the week.
