Most Crimes Against Dalits Are Against SC Women: NCRB Data
Uttar Pradesh was the state where maximum number of crimes took place in 2016, while Delhi reported the highest crime rate, latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report said on Thursday. "Majority of cases under crimes against women were reported under "Cruelty by Husband or His Relatives" (32.6%) followed by "Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage her Modesty" (25.0%), "Kidnaping & Abduction of Women" (19.0%) and "Rape" (11.5%)". When it comes to sexual harassment, Andhra Pradesh, with 1,305 cases, is behind only three States in the country.
Since past year, the total number of crimes in the country has increased by 2.6%, with Delhi reporting the highest crime rate of 974.9 under IPC crimes followed by Kerala (727.6) and Madhya Pradesh (337.9) against the national average of 233.6. Maharashtra is also second only to Delhi in cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, with 4,815 incidents a year ago. Delhi remains at the top when it comes to economic offences as well, with a total of 5,942 cases reported past year. A total of 91 cases were registered in Karnataka in 2016.
The city reported the highest number of murders - 479 out of 2,194 cases (21.8 percent) followed by Bengaluru 10.4 percent (229 cases) and Patna 8.9 percent (195 cases).
There were a total of 4.30 lakh cases registered under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code and state laws in Maharashtra in 2016. A total of 15,310 cases were reported in the union territory in 2016, down from 17,222 in 2015. "Delhi UT reported the highest crime rate (160.4) compared to the national average rate of 55.2", the NCRB report says.
Goa saw a high number of cheating cases while Delhi had more forgery incidents. Out of the 23,117 persons who were rescued during the year, children made 61.3% of the victims (including victims of 2015).
Further, the NCRB report has given ninth rank to AP based on the crime rate calculated as per population. A total of 1,06,900 ammunition was seized during 2016.
In terms of kidnapping and abduction also, Delhi reported the maximum number of cases at 5,453 or 48.3 per cent in 2016 followed by Mumbai with 1,876 cases or 16.6 per cent, and Bengaluru with 879 cases or 7.8 per cent. An analysis of 19 metropolitan cities by NCRB finds that Delhi accounted for 38.8% of total crimes reported in metro cities followed by Bengaluru (8.9%) and Mumbai (7.7%). There is an increase in crimes including rapes, kidnapping/abductions, offences against children, atrocities against Dalits and tribals, senior citizens and the number of juveniles involved in crimes.
