No ban for petulant Lukaku after Bong kick

Manchester United's Romelu Lukaku has escaped an FA charge for an incident during the 1-0 win over Brighton

Manchester United's Romelu Lukaku has escaped an FA charge for an incident during the 1-0 win over Brighton

Losing Lukaku for crunch games with the Gunners and Pep Guardiola's league leaders would be a huge blow to United boss Jose Mourinho.

The striker could also miss league matches against Watford and Arsenal.

The 24-year-old has more often made a decisive impact in the final third this term, with his eight goals in 13 Premier League matches, but Mourinho was also satisfied by Lukaku's work rate and defensive contribution as Chris Hughton's side made it hard for United in the 1-0 win.

Lukaku has scored 12 goals in 20 games since arriving from Everton in a £75 million deal in the summer but after starting his United career with 11 goals in his first 10 games, he has scored just once in his last 10.

Having Ibrahimovic back and available for United is a bonus, especially as there is a possibility of Lukaku picking up a suspension for tangling with Brighton's Gaetan Bong at the weekend.

"The way Romelu wins the corner for the goal, the way he ended the game, making tackles in left-back positions, that's the mentality I want", the Portuguese manager continued.

"Some guys are capable to go into the limits of their efforts and some other guys even with a lot of talent, they don't manage to do that". So Romelu, for me, [is] fantastic.

The FA are investigating claims the Manchester United striker kicked out at Gaeteng Bong during the clash at Old Trafford on Saturday. "He didn't score, but I don't care".

Ahead of their trip on Tuesday, Mourinho said he was still upset about the manner in which the game was officiated when United were beaten 3-1 at Vicarage Road last season.

"They have a squad full of very good players who are not normal to be in these mid-table teams".
