European Central Bank investigating Bairstow headbutt reports

England star investigated over Bancroft headbutt

Australia celebrate the wicket of England's Moeen Ali not shown during the Ashes cricket test between England and Australia in Brisbane Australia Sunday Nov. 26 2017

It is understood that Bancroft, who at that stage had not been selected for the Australian team, did not retaliate.

The wicket-keeper is being investigated by the European Central Bank over claims he aimed a butt at Australia ace Bancroft in Perth.

It comes at a time when the off-field behaviour of England's players remains in the spotlight following the arrest of batsman Ben Stokes following a brawl outside a Bristol nightclub in September.

The incident reportedly occurred at the Avenue Bar in Perth ahead of England's warm-up game against Western Australia.

Half-centuries from Bancroft and fellow opener David Warner saw Australia to 114-0 at the close.

England cricketer Jonny Bairstow has been questioned over claims he headbutted Australia's Cameron Bancroft in a bar in Perth.

England Test squad: Joe Root (c), James Anderson (vc), Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow, Jake Ball, Gary Ballance, Stuart Broad, Alastair Cook, Mason Crane, Tom Curran, Ben Foakes, Dawid Malan, Craig Overton, Ben Stokes, Mark Stoneman, James Vince, Chris Woakes.

Fox Sports Australia is reporting Bairstow headbutted Bancroft, while other versions suggest it was more low key and a case of tomfoolery gone awry.

European Central Bank on Sunday released a statement after discussions with their wicketkeeper-batsman in which they came close to exonerating Bairstow while adding that they will conclude their investigations after the first Test.

The ECB have been made aware of the allegations and are conducting their inquiries while Bairstow is playing in the First Ashes Test against Australia in Brisbane. The incident allegedly took place earlier this month at a Perth hotel bar while England were in town for a tour match, reports said.

Bairstow indeed was fined by European Central Bank in the fall-out of the Stokes affair along with Liam Plunkett and Jake Ball for being out late - but doing nothing wrong - on the same night that the talisman got involved in a serious altercation.

The matter has not been pursued by Bancroft, but Bairstow was given a big send-off by a couple of Australian players when he departed meekly to virtually end England's hopes of posting a competitive target. We certainly don't want to keep players in their rooms because it is a long tour.
