Trooper shot and killed in east-central Texas
Officials in Navarro County say a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper was shot and killed Thursday afternoon in east-central Texas. The trooper died at the scene.
Allen, a 15 year veteran of the department, leaves behind a wife and three children.
The shooting happened in Freestone County which is about 90 miles southeast of Dallas, Texas.
Smith County court records show Black was indicted in October after he led police on a chase in July and rammed his vehicle into a police cruiser after they tried to pull him over for speeding. "Excellent operation by numerous agencies to take this suspect into custody with no additional casualties", the Navarro County Office of Emergency Management said in a statement.
Police in Waller County say the suspect who shot and killed a DPS trooper in Freestone County was engaged in a shooting with deputies Thursday.
It was reported that last month, a Dabrett Montreal Black of Lindale was indicted by a Smith County Grand Jury on two felony charges stemming from a chase involving Smith County deputies in July.
"The killer will face justice, and the State of Texas will continue to offer our unwavering support for the men and women in law enforcement who keep our communities safe". Waller County authorities said shots were fired, but did not indicate who opened fire. There are four charges listed in his record, including the capital murder charge, for which no bond is listed.
The suspect was apprehended Thursday night near Prairie View, about 110 miles (177 kilometers) south of Fairfield.
Authorities have identified the suspect as Darbrett Black. He was married with three daughters and a son, according to an obituary that the funeral home posted Friday.
