Hotel fire on Georgia's Black Sea kills 11

TBILISI, DFWatch-11 people are confirmed dead, and an unknown number injured in a massive fire Friday night at a five-star hotel in Batumi which is hosting the Miss Georgia contest.

The victims died from inhaling fumes at the 22-storey Leogrand Hotel and Casino on Friday, regional Health Minister Zaal Mikeladze said. "They are being identified", the ministry said, adding that more than 100 people, including guests and employees, had been evacuated from the burning building.

There were three Turks and an Israeli among the wounded, Batumi University Hospital spokesperson said. "They all are in a stable condition", he added. Officials said none of the 20 contestants, who were reportedly staying in the hotel, were injured.

The cause of the blaze, which took hours to extinguish, is not clear.

Officials Say 12 Dead In Georgia Hotel Fire

Georgian Interior Minister Giorgi Gakharia told journalists it was found out there were some violations of fire safety standards at the hotel; in particular, the hotel lacked a fire escape.

Georgian Interior Ministry announced that the victims were 10 Georgian nationals and an Iranian man.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
