Georgia roads deadly last Thanksgiving, state officials encourage safe driving

Tennessee Highway Patrol encourages safe driving during holiday

According to The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more people die on the roads during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend due to alcohol-impaired driving than any other holiday.

Thanksgiving is usually a peak travel period, and troopers will be on the roads through Sunday.

There were 16 highway deaths during the Thanksgiving travel period previous year in the Palmetto State, according to the release. If you or anyone in your vehicle is not wearing their seat belt, they are at a much greater risk of being killed.

We all know how insane the roads can get this time of year.

AAA reports even more people are expected to travel this year than last year.

"Anytime you got more cars on the road, that's just more chance for a crash to occur", said Richardson.

The I-40 Challenge will consist of increased patrols along the interstate from Wednesday, Nov. 22 to Sunday, Nov. 26. "We want everyone to have a safe holiday and Thanksgiving". That means one person was killed or injured in a traffic crash every 10.8 minutes in Missouri over last year's Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

"Best thing people can do is plan ahead, leave with plenty of time to get there and practice save driving habits", said Richardson.

Georgia highway safety leaders parked Deputy Lamar Bowen's patrol vehicle near Signature Flight Support on Tuesday for a visual demonstration of a rollover crash.

Regardless of the day or season, their job is the same, to keep people safe, and visibility is one of their most important tools. State Troopers were at visitor centers in our area Wednesday talking to drivers.

"I can't say for certain that every one of them that would be wearing their seatbelts would have survived, but I sure do like the odds", said Harris Blackwood, Director of the Governor's Office of Highway Safety.
