Congress gets a shot in the arm in Gujarat after Hardik Patel comes on board

Congress to give reservation to Patidars: Hardik Patel

However, a nine-judge bench of the Supreme Court had held in 2007 that the insertion of a law in the Ninth Schedule will not save it from being struck down if, on judicial scrutiny, the law is found to be violating fundamental rights.

With Congress - Patidar Amanat Arakshan Samiti (PASS) bonhomie going sour following release of candidates' list by the Congress for the Gujarat Assembly polls, the Party high command on Tuesday summoned State party chief Bharat Singh Solanki to Delhi.

Union finance minister Arun Jaitley said the Congress and Hardik were deceiving each other and the public. "BJP has only lollipop for Patidars", Mr. Patel said.

It was only after the Congress accommodated as many as five of the 89 candidates in the first phase of polls that Hardik Patel made a decision to back Congress. The BJP veteran leader warned Hardik that a day will come when people of the Patidar community would teach him a lesson for "playing with their sentiments". On Monday, PAAS supporters ransacked Congress offices in Surat after the party declared its first list of candidates.

"Everything will be reveals clear in front of the people after the survey takes place, althrough the Congress also have to put their reservation formula with brief details in their manifesto", Hardik Patel said. "We have not sought any tickets from the Congress. Dilip Sabva did not inform me about his nomination from Botad seat and he will withdraw his form".

"Draft has been prepared between us and the Congress. Formula is not restricted to Patidar community alone", he added.

"Though it is very much clear that reservation quota can not go beyond 50 per cent in any situation, Hardik is trying to misguide the Patidar community with the formula offered by the Congress". "The law of the land is very clear and that is laid down by the Supreme Court and only last week in the Rajasthan case it has been re-affirmed that the 50 per cent cap can not be increased". "In my opinion, this formula of reservation is a big joke", Patel told reporters in Ahmedabad.

Patidar leader Hardik Patel announced on Wednesday his support for the Congress in next month's assembly elections in Gujarat, providing a shot in the arm for the opposition party trying to win the western state after more than two decades.
