Saudi Arabia seeks to ratchet up pressure against Iran

Iran Accuses Saudi Arabia of Pushing for War

Addressing an extraordinary Arab League meeting at ministers levels in Cairo, the minister said Jordan is ready to host or launch an extensive pan-Arab dialogue that would clearly identify all threats to common Arab security and agree on effective institutional mechanisms to address them.

"Iran s biggest arm in the region at the moment is the terrorist Hezbollah arm", Sheikh Khalid charged.

The League ministers affirmed Riyadh´s right to defend its territory and said they would support all legitimate procedures it might take "against these Iranian violations".

Arab diplomats said a Saudi draft resolution put forward to the Arab ministers is proposing a declaration of solidarity with the Kingdom and stating Arab support for actions it might take to safeguard its national security in the face of Tehran's policies.

Riyadh's latest effort to ratchet up pressure against its Shiite rival comes after Houthi rebels in Yemen fired a ballistic missile at Saudi Arabia earlier in the month. He is now cooling his heels in Paris, a journey connived by Saudi and French administrations.

Unsurprisingly, any Saudi-penned proposals are likely to fall on deaf ears in Tehran, with the Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif accusing Saudi Arabia of "warmongering" and "sowing discord" during a different summit with Turkey and Russian Federation in Antalya.

The draft appears to be in sync with Saudi Arabia's strong stance against Iran since the Houthis fired a missile on November 4.

The meeting was chaired by Djibouti's Foreign Minister and current chairman of the Arab Council of Foreign Ministers, Mahmoud Ali Yusuf, at the headquarters of the Arab League in Cairo and was attended by 15 ministers and six ministerial representatives. The meeting was held at the behest of Saudi Arabia amid heightened tension with Iran over developments in Lebanon and ongoing war against Yemen.

He said that Jordan considers the security of Saudi Arabia and Bahrain part of Jordan's security.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he will meet French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris in early December to discuss threats against Israel from Hezbollah and Iran and "ideas to stabilize the situation in Lebanon".

Lebanon was among the countries that voted in favour of the Arab League resolution, except for the points in which Hizbollah was mentioned.

According to Marwan Bishara, a senior political analyst has said that Saudi Arabia had convened the Cairo meeting in a bid to "consolidate its position in a divided Arab region".

"That doesn't mean they agree to the escalation of Iranian interference in various Arab countries, but paradoxically it was the incompetence and the division among those Arab countries that was the main factor why Iran is able to expand its influence in the region", added Bishara.
