Texas sheriff threatens to charge driver over graphic anti-Trump sticker

Driver speaks after 'F*** TRUMP' truck sticker photo goes viral

Houston-area sheriff goes after driver with 'offensive' anti-Trump decal

On Wednesday, Texas Sheriff Troy Nehls triggered a social media firestorm after taking to Facebook to threaten disorderly conduct charges against the driver of a truck displaying an anti-Trump decal.

In the post that has now been deleted, Nehls posted a photo of the sticker with the obscene words blacked out and a message that he wanted to "discuss" the sticker. "Our Prosecutor has informed us she would accept Disorderly Conduct charges regarding it, but I feel we could come to an agreement regarding a modification to it", Sheriff Nehls posted.

Nehl's post has gone viral, garnering almost 10,000 shares and more than 18,000 comments.

"Many families have called that have seen that truck on our county roadways and are very offended by the language on the truck", Nehls said.

"I'm offended that a sheriff in the United States would harass an American citizen over political speech", comments Jason.

KTRK reports Nehls said during a news conference that he had no regrets about the Facebook post.

"I don't want to see anything happen to anyone", he added. "We don't need to go there".

"It would be unsafe to our freedoms if you start going that route where a sheriff has the right to start censoring people about what might be offensive", said Philip Hilder, a Houston criminal defense attorney and former federal prosecutor.

The Texas chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union offered to help Fonseca - and provided Nehls with a "Constitutional Law 101" lesson: "You can't ban speech just because it has [f--] in it". Some supported his message, while others defended free speech or said the sheriff's department should focus on other high-profile crime in the community.

Nehls posted a photo of the truck Wednesday on his personal Facebook page after he said he'd received several complaints from unhappy people in the Houston-area county. She and her husband had the sticker made after Donald Trump was sworn into office.

Karen Forsenca said she and her husband have had the decal on their truck for nearly a year.

"It's hard to believe that a simple sticker could cause so much arousal", Fonseca said Thursday before her arrest.

Mike Fonseca said the sticker would remain on his truck. He said he didn't know what the charge was but records show she was accused of fraud.

Fonseca told the Chronicle that the sticker attracted plenty of attention even before the sheriff learned of it. People often honk their horns and take pictures.
