Trump sarcastically responds to Kim Jong Un insults

Consul discusses US-Korean relationship

Separate ways To a common meeting ground

USA president Donald Trump has insisted that by calling him old, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un had insulted him, adding that he would never stoop to the same level by calling Kim "short and fat".

Trump goes on to say sarcastically, "Oh well, I try so hard to be his friend - and maybe someday that will happen!"

He said he asked the Russian leader if he interfered in the 2016 USA election and received assurances from Mr Putin that he "absolutely did not meddle".

It comes on the same day Rodong Sinmun, the regime-run newspaper, warned the North would "surely win in the showdown" with the US and South Korea.

Asked if he could see himself being friends with Kim, Trump said: "That might be a unusual thing to happen but it's a possibility".

Asked at news conference with Vietnam's president later Sunday if he could become friends with the North Korean leader, Trump replied it "might be a unusual thing to happen but it's certainly a possibility". This came after the Asian dictator called Trump "old".

The president appeared to be responding to a statement from North Korea's foreign ministry Saturday, which warned that, "Reckless remarks by an old lunatic like Trump will never scare us or stop our advance".

Trump signed an executive order in September slapping new travel and economic sanctions on North Korea, as the administration seeks to pressure Kim Jong Un in a showdown over the North Korean leader's nuclear program.

He also tweeted about meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at APEC and how they had "good discussions" on Syria and that he hopes that they can solve the North Korea crisis together.

He said he doesn't know if that friendship will develop, but added it would be "very, very nice if it did".

"Every step you take down this dark path increases the peril you face".

North Korea conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear bomb test on September 3, prompting another round of United Nations sanctions.

This isn't the first time Trump and Kim have traded barbs. This isn't the first time North Korea have employed the 14th century term to insult Trump, with "dotard" sprinkled across a statement in September which ended: "I will surely and definitely tame the mentally deranged USA dotard with fire".
