Boat capsizes in Vijayawada, 16 dead, 10 Missing

Thirteen people lost their lives when their boat capsized in the Krishna river on Sunday evening.

The National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) are undertaking search and rescue operations.

Police in the city of Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh state said they recovered at least 16 bodies from Krishna River where the accident took place. "Many of the tourists got trapped under the overturned boat and died of suffocation", said one of them. 35 people boarded the boat which has the capacity of only 15 people. The boat was owned by private agency, Simple Water Sports.




"We received information five minutes after the incident occurred and local fishermen and boatmen had already rescued a few people".

Tourism minister Bhuma Akhila Priya ordered an inquiry into the incident and directed her department officials to ascertain whether the boat operator had requisite permissions.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister N China Rajappa, leader of opposition Y S Jaganmohan Reddy and others expressed grief over the tragedy. Bad light is believed to have hampered rescue operations.
