WARGAMES South Koreans to host military drills with Trumps top warships
A spokesperson for the South Korean Ministry of Defense told EFE in Seoul that the three U.S. aircraft carriers will also carry out maneuvers with the South Korean Navy, closer to North Korean territory, in the Sea of Japan - alternatively called the East Sea in the two Koreas.
The U.S. 7th Fleet, which announced the exercise yesterday, have said it will demonstrate its resolve with allies Japan and South Korea.
Units assigned to the strike force will conduct coordinated operations in worldwide waters off the Korean peninsula from Saturday through Tuesday in order to demonstrate the Navy's unique capability to operate multiple carrier groups as a coordinated force.
The U.S. 7th Fleet on Wednesday said three aircraft strike groups would begin a "three-carrier strike force exercise in the Western Pacific" from Saturday to Tuesday.
U.S. Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Scott Swift described the training as a "rare opportunity".
The aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan conducts joint drills with the South Korean navy at sea on October 19.
The three flattops are the USS Ronald Reagan, Nimitz and Theodore Roosevelt.
During the drill, the first of its kind in a decade, the warships will carry out air strike and defense simulations, maritime surveillance, sea supply, coordinated fenced maneuvers and other training, added the Navy.
The Navy noted that for more than 70 years, the U.S. Pacific Fleet has been a persistent and stabilizing presence conducting operations throughout the region.
"It makes sense for North Korea to come to the table and make a deal that is good for the people of North Korea and for the world", Trump told media at a news conference following a summit with South Korean counterpart Moon Jae-in.
The JCS said in a statement that the exercise was seeking to strengthen and expand the dissuasive strategy to prevent Pyongyang from carrying out further provocations in the form of arms tests.
During his recent visit to Seoul, Trump said, " North Korea is not the paradise your grandfather envisioned.
He said of the North Korean threats to strike the USA and its allies, "That would be a fatal miscalculation".
