Lebanon's Prime Minister Resigns, Fears Plot On His Life

Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri Announces Sudden Resignation - Reports

Lebanese prime minister suggests he fears for his life, resigns

The Lebanese army said Sunday it had not uncovered any plot for assassination in the country, one day after Prime Minister Saad Hariri announced a surprise resignation.

"In response, Velayati called on Hariri to have the Saudis stop their airstrikes against the innocent and besieged nation of Yemen and establish dialogue with the Yemenis to resolve the crisis underway in the country", the source told the Fars News Agency.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Hariri's resignation and comments "are a wake-up call to the global community to take action against the Iranian aggression that is trying to turn Syria into Lebanon 2".

Following Hariri's decision to step down, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the resignation should be a "wake-up call" to the global community to the threat posed by Iran's regional ambitions, which he said endanger not only Israel but the entire Middle East.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was concerned by Hariri's resignation and hoped all sides in the country would back its state institutions, his spokesman on Lebanon Stephane Dujarric said in an emailed statement.

The two-time prime minister, whose father Rafik held the same position for years and was assassinated in 2005, accused Iran and its powerful Lebanese Shiite ally Hezbollah of seeking hegemony in the region. Hezbollah denies any involvement.

Hariri's death was followed by a series of assassinations against Hezbollah opponents. But Hezbollah fighters poured into Syria, angering Saudi Arabia.

"I declare my resignation from the premiership of the Lebanese government, with the certainty that the will of the Lebanese is strong", Hariri said. "But unfortunately, this pushed Iran and its allies to more interference in our internal affairs", he said.

Hariri, a Sunni Muslim, has been serving as prime minister since December 2016.

"The resignation was a Saudi decision dictated to prime minister Saad al-Hariri and forced on him", Nasrallah said in a televised broadcast, adding that there was no domestic reason for Hariri's decision.

In tweets after meeting Hariri, al-Sabhan criticized the Lebanese government for tolerating Hezbollah's criticism of the kingdom.

"So Lebanon is back on the table as a stage for the next tug of war", she said.
