Broncos face uncertainty at quarterback following third straight loss

The Broncos don't have much choice after Trevor Siemian's no good, very bad game against the Chiefs on Monday Night Football.

Lynch returned to practice for the first time since suffering the injury last Wednesday. He also played poorly for the Texans in last season's AFC Divisional Playoff in Foxboro, throwing for just 197 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions and finishing with an abysmal 47.6 passer rating. The team needs a fresh change, as they are up against the NFC-leading Eagles this Sunday, who are 7-1.

Denver signed Osweiler prior to the start of the regular season after the Cleveland Browns released him, and he has been Siemian's backup with Lynch nursing a shoulder injury that kept him inactive for the first eight weeks. The Broncos have now benched the guy who beat out Lynch - twice - for the job and are going with the quarterback they signed when Lynch got hurt in the preseason.

A few bleary-eyed hours studying game film early Tuesday morning wasn't enough time for Joseph to make that decision. "It's the end result that we're not getting".

Osweiler went 5-2 as the starter for the Broncos in 2015 while filling in for injured Peyton Manning.

Osweiler, Peyton Manning's longtime backup, was expected to take over the Broncos QB job a year ago following Manning's retirement a month after Denver's Super Bowl 50 win. The Broncos may look to trade him next offseason and move on with Osweiler, Lynch or someone else.

Paxton Lynch, who was a full participant in practice last week for the first time since injuring his throwing shoulder in a preseason game August 26, "won't be in the mix" to start Sunday, Joseph said.

Osweiler replaces Trevor Siemian, who nearly single-handedly caused the Broncos' skid by recording seven turnovers and compiling a 64.1 passer rating during Denver's losing streak.

"In your heart, you know he can play better because those three balls he threw, you just can't throw".

Last season with the Houston Texans, Osweiler quarterbacked a first-round playoff victory over the Derek Carr-less Oakland Raiders.

"It's my job to do what's best for the football team", said Joseph on Tuesday.
