Japanese firm gives non-smokers extra six days holiday

Company will give non-smoking employees 6 extra days off

This Japanese firm rewards non-smoker employees to promote productive work culture

The change in company policy is meant to encourage staff to quit smoking.

A 2016 report examining karoshi cases and their cause of death found that more than 20% of people in a survey of 10,000 Japanese workers said they worked at least 80 hours of overtime a month.

Piala Inc., a marketing firm in Japan - known for exceptionally high smoking rates - is now giving nonsmoking employees an extra six days of time off each year to make up for the smoking breaks their colleagues regularly take. "The company is willing to take an even tougher anti-smoking measure in the future", said a public relations officer. Piala, a Tokyo-based online commerce consulting and marketing company, made a decision to kick-start the programme after an employee complained about the time lost work by smoking colleagues.

Piala employees told leadership their smoking coworkers generally spend about 15 minutes on each smoke break.

"I hope to encourage employees to quit smoking through incentives rather than penalties or coercion", Asuka said.

"Our CEO saw the comment and agreed".

Unsurprisingly, staffers who don't smoke have been pleased with the bonus time.

In Japan, while smoking is allowed in restaurants and bars without any designated smoking area, it is banned on the streets.

The Japanese government is looking at a possible ban on all cigarettes in public areas in preparation for the 2020 Olympic Games. Piala Inc.is trying to encourage employees to quit.

One of those new non-smokers, Shun Shinbaba, 25, told CNNMoney he used to smoke a pack of cigarettes every two days, and that he plans to use his newfound vacation time to play tennis.

The organisation, which has approximately 120 employees, launched the benefit to staff in September, and to date it has been taken up by 31 employees.
