Students at the University of Utah are advised to shelter in place after shots reportedly broke out on campus Monday night

Not Released

"It is with great sadness that I must tell you that on Monday evening, ChenWei Guo, one of our worldwide students, was killed in a senseless, random act of violence", a letter for University of Utah President David W. Pershing said Tuesday.

Austin Boutain, 24, was arrested Tuesday, Salt Lake City police said in a tweet.

Campus police later received calls reporting shots fired.

The suspect is Austin Boutain, police said.

Salt Lake City police Sgt. Brandon Shearer told the Salt Lake Tribune that "one person is confirmed deceased".

This undated photo provided by University of Utah shows ChenWei Guo, a student killed in an attempted carjacking near campus Monday, Oct. 30, 2017.

Authorities now believe Boutain may be also be connected to a murder in Colorado.

Police say Boutain had been camping in the foothills with his wife for at least a few days.

Boutain is also wanted for questioning in the death of a 63-year-old man in Golden, Colorado.

Lori McDonald, the University of Utah's dean of students, said Guo served as a peer adviser to help other global students find their bearings on campus and described him as "extremely outgoing, charming, creative, smart".

University officials canceled Tuesday classes.

Guo served as a missionary in Provo and volunteered as a foreign language interpreter for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and recently persuaded his parents to join the church, Comrie said.

The university advised those on campus to shelter in place and issued a campus alert Monday about 9 p.m.

Tam said Guo also wowed his friends on the dance floor with hip hop moves.
