GameStop offers used video game rentals with PowerPass program
31 October 2017, 12:38 | Shelley Chandler
New GameStop rental scheme lets you play unlimited number of pre-owned games
The Power Pass program is expected to start on November 19th. It also means you can buy a GameStop PowerPass subscription when you buy a new console this holiday season. Stay tuned to Paste, as GameStop is sure to release more details in the near future.
According to a magazine ad, GameStop is planning on rolling out a new video game rental service called Power Pass that will allow you to "rent" your local GameStop's pre-owned games.
Digital game sales have been on the rise in recent years, threatening traditional retail stores which thrive on selling physical discs and cartridges, but the latest program from GameStop could be enough to get players back in stores.
The $60 covers six months of rental time and at the end of that period, players are able to choose a pre-owned game to keep.
Pay GameStop $60 and you can take home a copy of any used game the store sells for six months.
In effect, this partially puts GameStop in direct competition with RedBox, which already enjoys a bit of an edge in the game rental business with its widely dispersed units.
Selections are limited to pre-owned titles found in a physical store and not those found in GameStop's sizable online inventory, which potentially limits the selection a little.
It sounds like a fair deal, but the real trick for subscribers will be timing it so that they play the game they really want last in their subscription cycle. Here is something exciting; the members would get to keep the last game that they checked out.
