Malayalam filmmaker IV Sasi dies at 69 in Chennai

It was to become an art director that he boarded a train to Chennai in 1968.

Sasi was prepping to make a comeback after a gap of nearly eight years after the film Vellathooval, starring Rejit Menon and Nithya Menon.

"The demise of I V Sasi, who has given us evergreen hits and has directed the most number of movies in Malayalam, is a loss that can not be compensated". This was the most fruitful period in his career as his films not only made moolah at the box office, but were also critically acclaimed.

I.V Sasi played a key role in turning actors like Mammootty, Mohanlal, Jayan, Sukumaran, Soman, Vincent and Seema into stars.

IV Sasi had worked with Mammotty in films like Thrishna and Mrugaya which were phenomenal hits and established Mammokka's stardom. All these films also had Sasi's wife Seema playing either the female lead or other important parts.

The love Kozhikode and the industry had for Sasi was seen in a huge public reception held there in 2013 when nearly everyone who acted in his films turned up. The MD of Aries Group said he discussed about the film with Sasi even two days before the latter's death.

In a career spanning close to four decades, he directed more than 150 films. While he directed the first color cinema in Malayalam, Itha Ivide Varae (1977), he also made the first Cinemascope movie, Alavuddinum Athbhudhavilakum (1979). He was also remembered for giving big breaks to Malayalam superstars Mammooty and Mohanlal. He was one of the filmmakers, who understood the aesthetics of revolution. "I salute the master who made the viewers and actors, including me, understand the basics of cinema". Though his name was not mentioned in the credits, the film turned out to be a huge success.

Sasi was at his prime between 70s and 90s, during whichhe also directed popular Tamil actors like Kamal Haasan andSuperstar Rajinikanth.
