India vs New Zealand T20 squad: Shreyas Iyer, Mohammed Siraj named in T20I squad

Mumbai's swashbuckling batsman Shreyas Iyer and Hyderabad pacer Mohammad Siraj were the surprise picks for India's three-match Twenty20 worldwide series against New Zealand, which will be played between November 1-7.

Ashish Nehra has been picked for the first match which will be played in Delhi's Ferozshah Kotla on November 1.

Chairman of selectors MSK Prasad said that naming Nehra for his farewell match does not guarantee him a place in the playing 11 in front of his home crowd. Whether he is going to play or not, it is clearly the team management and the selector on call, whoever it is. "Shreyas has been prolific in all forms of the game, be it four-day's format, be it one-day or T20, be it IPL, he has been performing". In his last 10 innings, 22-year-old Iyer has scored two centuries and three fifties of which two scores were above 80s.

Dinesh Karthik has also been called up while KL Rahul returned after he was sidelined for the ongoing ODI series against New Zealand. He comes in for fellow Tamil Nadu batsman Abhinav Mukund and has enough time to prove his fitness as the three-Test series gets under way from November 16 in Kolkata. "He is doing well, he has been duly recognised and rewarded as well".

"We can't say that [if he will surely play in the Delhi T20I]". Prasad also made it clear that Nehra would be not assured of a starting spot in his farewell match with that decision being left up to the team management.

There were reports about selectors giving rest to Virat Kohli during the T20I series due to the workload, but the MSK Prasad-led team quashed all the reports and appointed him as the skipper for the 3-match series. There is no assurance from our side that he's going to play or not.

Squad for T20I vs New Zealand: Virat Kohli (Captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Lokesh Rahul, Manish Pandey, Shreyas Iyer, Dinesh Karthik, MS Dhoni (WK), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Ashish Nehra (only for first T20I).
