Police chief Hubertus Andrae said that investigators had ruled out terrorism or religion as a motive for the attack.

Writing on Twitter, Munich Police said: 'We are searching for the perpetrator of the attack with all available police'.

No one was seriously hurt in the attack that started at around 8.30 a.m.in the Haidhausen area, east of downtown Munich. They're not yet sure whether he is the assailant.

The lone attacker apparently went after passers-by indiscriminately with a knife, police said. Four people received minor injuries in the attack.

The victims largely suffered from superficial stab wounds and in at least one case had been hit. They said he was heavy, unshaven with short blond hair and had a black bicycle and a backpack.

The motivation for the attack is still unclear as the suspect refused to make a statement during his interrogation by police.

"We have arrested a suspected person".

Officers also urged locals to remain in their homes until the suspect is detained.

The attacker is on the run after stabbing multiple people at the Rosenheimer station in the German city's central square, according to reports.
