People Hated Google Maps' Calorie Estimator For A Very Valid Reason

Google Maps ditches automatic calorie estimates after users say it's not helpful and even potentially harmful

Google Maps Shows Walking Distance As Calories And People Are Pissed

The feature, which was developed for iOS only, showed not only the number of calories a user could burn by walking, but also put the walk in terms of mini cupcakes.

After receiving harsh criticism from people who suffer or have suffered from eating disorders, Google has chose to remove the small cupcake calorie counter from its Google Maps iOS apps.

Apparently daring to compare burning off calories to the consumption of innocuous, cute cupcakes is cancerous in 2017, with social justice warriors going off their politically correct trees.

The feature was introduced last week as a test to some iOS users but a Google rep has since told Tech Crunch that the app was being pulled following "strong user feedback".

To solidify this point, the tool then converted the amount of calories into how many mini cupcakes could potentially be burned off by walking. "One mini cupcake is around 110 Calories". If a walking route was chosen, calories were displayed in the step-by-step directions, but not on the map itself.

"This walk burns around 313 Calories - that's nearly 3 mini cupcakes", a message within the app's walking directions read, according to CNN.

U.S. tech journalist Taylor Lorenz led the way, prompting a fierce online debate about the update after claiming it was triggering for people who struggled with their weight or eating disorders.

People from all walks of life generally don't like to be reminded of calories, whether it's how many they're consuming or how many they could be burning.

Perhaps Google will try testing this feature again in the future, but not until the dust settles from the failure of the first test. There's no way to turn the feature off, critics pointed out. Additionally, the app doesn't take into account a user's personal health information, in the least height and weight, to calculate the calories that would be burned. Some twitter users said the feature could "shame" and even "trigger" those with eating disorders. Unfortunately for Google, theirs is the most popular one.
