Get To Know The Artists Painting The Obamas' Official Portraits

Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald to Paint Portraits of Barack and Michelle Obama

The paintings are scheduled to be unveiled next year and added to the National Portrait Gallery's popular collection of presidential and first lady portraits.

The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery made the announcement yesterday that former president Barack Obama wants Kehinde Wiley to paint his official portrait.

Obama's predecessors have preferred to sit for 90-year old portrait artist Everett Raymond Kinstler, who has painted eight USA presidents, but Obama chose to go with Kehinde.

In 2008, Wiley told the BBC that he would "love" to paint Obama's official portrait.

Amy Sherald is painting Michelle Obama's portrait and former President Barack Obama has chosen his artist. We definitely can not wait to see the paintings of the Obamas; they're sure to make us miss them even more.

Sherald (b. Columbus, Ga., 1973), who is based in Baltimore, was selected by Mrs. Obama to paint her portrait. The Los Angeles native uses a rich, highly saturated color palette in the form of decorative patterns to create a realistic, yet expressive, likeness of his subjects.

While they are not the first ever to paint presidential portraits (the White House commissioned black artist, Simmie Knox, to paint the Clintons in 2000), their selection still makes history.

Sherald's trademark gray-toned masterpieces have taken the art world by storm, and she is the recipient of several prizes, including the National Portrait Gallery's prestigious Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition. His paintings are best described as vibrant and large in scale.

After each presidency, the museum work with the White House to commission one official portrait of the president, and another of his spouse.
