Rescue officials are rushing to an oil rig that exploded in Lake Ponchartrain Sunday night.

The state Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office and Bayou Gauche Fire Department also responded.

The Coast Guard told CBS New Orleans affiliate WWL-TV the missing person is a ma.

The company that owns an oil and gas platform that exploded says a contract worker is missing, and three company employees and four contractors are injured. According to Jefferson Parish officials, one person is unaccounted for. "We are treating it as a search and rescue", Lopinto said.

Three workers remain in hospital for blast and burn treatment, some in critical condition, Mike Guillot, emergency medical services director at East Jefferson General Hospital, said during a news briefing on Monday.

What caused the blast is unclear, but fire investigators are looking at the possibility of a combination of chemicals that may have ignited on the platform and led to the explosion. He said the department's current goal is to stop oil flow and, if needed, let it burn off safely.

The platform, located in Jefferson Parish, is used for the transfer of oil, said Chief David Tibbets of the East Bank Consolidated Fire Department.

Social media users reported hearing a loud noise on Sunday evening that even rattled some homes.

Residents said they heard an explosion from several miles away and the Coast Guard is on the scene. "At first I thought it was a sonic boom or something, I had no idea what was happening".

To the scene, where still you can see the flames, sent the boat with the rescuers.

Sheriff Joe Lopinto of Jefferson Parish said that the search of Lake Pontchartrain would continue for "as long as it takes".

The Coast Guard will be conducting a water quality evaluation as well as the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation.
