Kids aged 13 to 17 can now link their own accounts to their parents', and parents will be able to oversee kids' activity through setting spending limits and text and email purchase approval.

The retail giant introduced a new program this week for the children of Amazon customers to use their parents' accounts to make purchases and stream TV shows and movies. Parents can either sign up their teen, or a teen can send an invitation to mom or dad via SMS or email.

"As a parent of a teen, I know how they crave independence, but at the same time, that has to be balanced with the convenience and trust that parents need", Michael Carr, vice president of Amazon Households, said in a statement. From there, the teenager is free to create their own username and password and then use that to log into the Amazon App. Their parents, meanwhile, can approve their purchases by text message or set spending limits per order.

A Household allows you to connect and share Amazon benefits with the whole family. The accounts will allow them to search and shop for items, but there are some restrictions so that parents don't have to worry about their bank accounts. They can also cancel or return orders their teens have made.

This codifies a process that was already taking place unofficially: For as long as it's been possible to buy things online, kids have logged into their parents' accounts to do so. Teens will also have access to features like Prime Video and other "select" benefits typically associated with Amazon Prime (like Twitch Prime), meaning they're essentially getting a potential five-year trial run of their own full Prime account.
