Bayern Munich Confirm Carlo Ancelotti Replacement

Heynckes 'close to taking over' at crisis-hit Bayern

Heynckes a very good solution for Bayern – Low

Bayern Munich have announced the return of former manager Jupp Heynckes, who will replace Carlo Ancelotti as first-team manager until the end of the season.

Despite his age, Heynckes says he feels "fit" enough to coach Bayern, who he led to the Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup treble in 2013.

The club could not be immediately reached for a comment.

Ancelotti was sacked last month following a 3-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

German media report that Heynckes could return to Bayern until the end of the season with current Hoffenheim coach Julian Nagelsmann tipped to take over for the 2018/19 season.

Heynckes retired from football after winning the club's only treble in 2013 and will take charge of the team together with his assistants Peter Hermann and Herman Gerland.

"There is great trust between Jupp Heynckes and Bayern, ' said Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge". "This has been shown again by the conversations that (president) Uli Hoeness, (sporting director) Hasan Salihamidzic and I have held. We are thankful that Jupp has accepted the job as our head coach".

Bayern will not want to just stand still and write off another season in which the club only wins the Bundesliga.

"I wouldn't have returned [to management] to any other club in the world", he said of his decision to come out of retirement. "He's the ideal coach for FC Bayern at this moment in time". "I am looking forward to this task".

Work in Spain followed, at Athletic Bilbao, Tenerife and Real Madrid, where he won the Champions League in 1997.

Heynckes previously coached Bayern from 1987 to 1991, briefly in 2009 and then between 2011 and 2013.

This would be the 72-year-old's fourth spell with the German giants.
