After almost a century of building vehicles powered by fossil fuels, General Motors - one of the world's largest automakers - announced Monday that the end of GM producing internal combustion engines is fast approaching.
Get ready for a whole lot more electric vehicles at General Motors dealerships, with the automaker announcing its ambitious plans for "an all-electric future". We can all be pretty sure that electric vehicles will be a significant part of whatever Hackett has to say, but Ford's problem is that, unlike GM, it needs to show a commitment to a new and rapidly evolving industry with some concrete idea of where it stands and where it's going. The plan builds upon the company's vision of having zero emission, zero crashes and zero traffic congestion, a plan outlined by GM CEO Mary Barra.
"General Motors believes in an all-electric future", said Mark Reuss, General Motors' head of product development. "Although that future won't happen overnight, GM is committed to driving increased usage and acceptance of electric vehicles". The company's new cars will be based on the "learnings" from the Chevrolet Bolt, a mass-market electric vehicle that has been well received.
Motors is ramping up its lineup of all-electric cars. But at the very least they want to make some progress like many other companies have. Some of the electric vehicles GM will offer in China are among the 20 Reuss promised by 2023.
Even though gasoline-powered SUVs are what people are buying now, General Motors is betting that electric vehicles will be all the rage in the not-too-distant future.
Meanwhile, electric carmaker Tesla said Monday that it delivered a record number of vehicles in the third quarter - but fewer of its new Model 3 sedans than anticipated.
GM shares were up 4%, to $42, though most of those gains came ahead of the news.
Beyond consumer vehicles, GM also introduced the Silent Utility Rover Universal Superstructure, or SURUS. These hydrogen fuel cell vehicles will use compressed hydrogen gas which is combined with oxygen on board the vehicle to produce electricity.
The first 500 electric vehicles will be supplied to EESL in November and the remainder will be delivered in the second phase, it said. GM envisions SURUS as a delivery vehicle, truck or ambulance.
