After Las Vegas shooting, Facebook and Google get the news wrong again

Facebook activates safety check after 50 killed in Las Vegas shooting

Conservative website misidentifies Las Vegas shooter, brands him as anti-Trump

Google also put the Politically Incorrect 4chan thread in its top story unit Monday morning.

The social network said links from Web sites such as "The Gateway Pundit" and others were posted and spread across their site Sunday night.

Russian "bots" have been blamed for trying to frame Danley, spreading posts on social media before verified sources confirmed the shooter was Paddock.

Authorities have since identified the gunman as Stephen Paddock, 64, who was later found dead in a hotel room on the Strip.

4chan's inclusion anywhere near Google News' "authoritative" list is a troubling one, since 4chan users have consistently and repeatedly used the site to promote false stories about newsworthy figures.

"Google saying "when the fresh 4chan story broke" makes me wonder if Google even....knows what 4chan is?"

Perhaps the most egregious strain of misinformation took hold after far-right trolls gathered on 4chan, a forum in which individuals are permitted to post nearly anything anonymously, and, through some amateur online sleuthing, misidentified the shooter. Furthermore, this White House-credentialed website also implied that the mass murderer was a Democrat and was anti-Trump.

The stories claimed that the shooter was an "anti-Trump" Democrat and displayed pictures of a man who is not identified as a suspect.

And for a time on Monday morning, one of those 4chan threads falsely naming Danley as the shooter was promoted by Google as a "top story" for searches for his name, as one BuzzFeed reporter noticed. "However, its removal was delayed by a few minutes, allowing it to be screen captured and circulated online", the firm told Fast Company.

A shooter opened fire October 1 on a music festival in Las Vegas, Nevada, killing at least 58 people, and injuring hundreds more.

In a statement to Business Insider, a Google spokesperson said the link to 4chan was algorithmically removed within several hours of it appearing in search results for some users.

"Unfortunately, early this morning we were briefly surfacing an inaccurate 4chan website in our Search results for a small number of queries". The named appeared on the board when its members began looking through people connected to names that had been mentioned by Las Vegas investigators. When asked why its Crisis Response and News Stories algorithms failed to catch any of this, we did not get an answer, but Facebook said it is "working to fix the issue that allowed this to happen in the first place and deeply regret the confusion this caused".
