Southern District Of NY Announces Federal Criminal Charges In College Basketball
US authorities on Tuesday unveiled fraud charges against 10 people associated with some of the country's premier college basketball programs, including four coaches and an Adidas AG executive, following a two-year corruption probe.
Person was quoted by prosecutors as telling one player: "The most important part is that you. don't say nothing to anybody. don't share with your sisters, don't share with any of the teammates, that's very important 'cause this is a violation. of rules".
Federal prosecutors said at least three top high school recruits were promised payments of as much as $150,000, using money supplied by Adidas, to attend two universities sponsored by the athletic shoe company.
"He's a brother that I never had, a great friend and a tremendous coach, and he will be standing here one day", Boynton said of Evans at his introductory press conference in March.
One of them, Lamont Evans, worked under current University of IL head coach Brad Underwood when Underwood was the head coach at Oklahoma State University.
Joon Kim, the acting USA attorney in Manhattan, told a press conference the defendants showed "contempt" for players and coaches who follow the rules.
Oklahoma State assistant basketball coach Lamont Evans has turned himself in to authorities Wednesday morning at the U.S. Marshals Office, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He later played for the Indiana Pacers and other teams in a 13-year National Basketball Association career. The charges stem from Evans' time at SC as well as OSU. The meeting was recorded by the cooperating witness.
The scheme involved Evans allegedly taking bribes from these advisers to get his players to sign with their agencies. Person and Evans were suspended, and Bland was placed on administrative leave.
Jim Gatto, the director of global sports marketing in basketball for Adidas, was among those charged in the investigation. Of course, we will cooperate with investigators and we look forward to justice being done in this case. He is accused of paying a coach to pay a player to sign with his school.
Underwood, now the head coach at IL, hired Evans as his assistant and recruiting coordinator when he was named head coach at Oklahoma State in 2016 following the firing of Travis Ford. Behavior like this will not be tolerated in our programs. "Because this is an ongoing criminal matter, we will have no further comment".
