Russian air strikes on northwest Syria's mainly extremist-controlled province of Idlib on Monday killed at least 37 civilians including 12 children, a Britain-based monitor said.

Together with Asapov, that brings the overall death toll of Russian troops in Syria to 37.

A Russian general was killed while battling Islamic State group militants near the eastern Syrian city of Deir Ezzor, Moscow's defence ministry said Sunday.

"The death of the Russian commander is the price, the bloody price for the two-faced American policy in Syria", Ryabkov, was quoted by state-run RIA Novosti and other news agencies as saying.

The advances against Islamic State have brought USA -backed forces and the Syrian government side, backed by Russian Federation and Iran, into close proximity.

USA -backed forces said on Saturday they had seized a major natural gas field in Syria's Deir al-Zor Province from Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants in rapid advances since the start of an operation earlier this month to capture areas east of the Euphrates river.

USA -backed forces said Sunday they were advancing through eastern Syria after seizing the Conoco gas plant there from Islamic State, striking a blow to the terror group's dwindling finances, which rely heavily on its control of Syria's oil and gas fields. Moscow denied the allegation that it struck the militia's forces at the Conoco gas plant.

Meanwhile, Syrian media reported that government and allied troops have seized Maadan, a town north of Deir el-Zor and south of Raqqa, which has been scene to intense fighting with Islamic State militants.

Lieutenant-General Asapov was staying at the command post of Syrian troops to help Syrian commanders in a military operation to liberate Deir ez-Zor.

It was one of the Islamic State's most important sources of funding, analysts say.

Russian soldiers stand guard in a central street in Syria's eastern city of Deir Ez-Zor. On the agency's website aerial photographs were posted showing the location of USA special forces, and the ministry said there "are no signs of organized combat security" at the positions of the U.S. armed forces.

"We will not stand by with our arms crossed and we will use our legitimate right to self-defence", said the statement by the SDF, which fights alongside the USA -led coalition.
