Hurricane Jose strengthens slightly 500 miles south of Bermuda: NHC
The Tropics continue to stay very active, as Tropical Storms Lee and Maria join Hurricane Jose as active tropical systems in the Atlantic basin. Lee is moving west at 10mph and packing winds up to 40 miles per hour. Tropical storm watches could be issued for parts of the U.S. coast, from North Carolina to New England, over the next day or two, according to the advisory, the 45th so far on the long-lived weather system.
Jose has maximum sustained winds of 90 mph and is located 305 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, NC, moving north at 9 mph.
Hurricane center advisories and forecast discussions are updated at 5 a.m., 11 a.m., 5 p.m. and 11 p.m., with special bulletins as warranted.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said yesterday that tropical storm watches were possible for the U.S. East Coast over the next day or so and advised people from North Carolina to New England to monitor Jose's progress because of the potential for life-threatening rip-currents.
Masters said the storm's path could be influenced by Hurricane Jose, now hundreds of miles east of Florida and moving toward the coast of New England.
New reports also claimed that the weather forecasters believe that Jose could possibly bring strong winds and Nor'easter-like conditions in the areas of NY and Boston sometime next week.
Jose is now a Category 1 hurricane, with winds of about 80 miles per hour.
A hurricane warning is in effect for Guadeloupe, Dominica, St. Kitts, Nevis and Montserrat.
Forecasters cautioned those along the East Coast from North Carolina all the way northward to New England to keep a close watch on Jose. Jose and Maria are two of 13 named Atlantic storms this season, which has so far killed at least 100 people. Tropical storm watches were issued earlier in the day for other islands in the chain.
Meanwhile, a hurricane watch was issued for the US Virgin Islands as Maria became a hurricane Sunday evening.
Tropical storm warnings have been issued for coastal MA and Rhode Island.
Another storm began brewing in the Atlantic over the weekend, sparking fears that it may follow the destructive path of Hurricane Irma through the Caribbean and Florida. The storm is forecast to become a tropical storm again by next Tuesday. Forecasters said the storm was weakening and its center was likely to remain offshore.
