Julia Louis Dreyfus in Veep
Julia Louis-Dreyfus managed to throw several jabs at President Donald Trump at the 69th Emmys.
The 56-year-old actress - who became famous for playing in Saturday Night Live and Seinfeld - promised a "great final season" of Veep. Janney, an Emmys favorite, has already won the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role on Mom, but this year she was upgraded to lead actress.
HBO announced earlier in the month that season 7 of Veep is set to air in 2018, and will be the show's last.
Veep also won the award for Outstanding Comedy Series during the show! The series has been an awards-season juggernaut for the last few years, kicking Modern Family off its Emmys pedestal in the best-comedy category after a long streak. Currently, the honour goes to Cloris Leachman, who has eight awards under her belt.
Can't watch the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards? "Both in person and around the world", Spicer shouted with authority, echoing his claim that Trump's inauguration crowd was the biggest ever and evoking McCarthy's manic portrayal of him.
"I remember the first time we won this award", creator Lorne Michaels said in accepting the show's trophy for best variety sketch series. While sipping "specialty cocktails" of the "dry, British" variety, Colbert said, "Yes, it's so high quality, they can only make it once a week". She thanked her "boyfriend" Brad Hall (C80), and her sons, and called her stint as Meyer "the role of a lifetime... utter joy".
Now-legendary Louis-Dreyfus accepted her award toward the end of the evening, and kept her speech to the packed house at Los Angeles' Microsoft Theater short but still meaningful.
Everyone knows Game of Thrones is a record-breaking Emmy machine (the series has earned 38 statues, beating out Frasier as the most-won scripted show).
