CoCo Vandeweghe Into The Quarters After Concentrating On Fitness This Year

Madison Keys of the United States returns in a fourth-round match against Elina Svitolina of Ukraine at the U.S. Open tennis tournament in New York Monday Sept. 4 2017

Pliskova's next opponent will be 20th seed Coco Vandeweghe, who reached her third grand slam quarter-final of the season with a 6-4 7-6 (7/2) victory over Lucie Safarova.

The world number one had to save match point before beating China's Shaui Zhang in the third round but she was hardly forced to break sweat against the American world number 91, running out a 6-1 6-0 victor at Flushing Meadows.

"The opponent was not the best today".

Jakub: If I was to predict this match before they played their 4th rounds, I actually might have favored CoCo for the win, but Pliskova's demolishment of Jennifer Brady was very impressive.

Safarova certainly had her chances in this match, and potentially could have won both sets, though the Czech will be rueing several missed opportunities as Vandeweghe was able to battle her way through to a third Grand Slam quarterfinal this year, after reaching the semifinals at the Australian Open and the last eight at Wimbledon. The Czech Republic native is in the quarterfinals for the second consecutive year.

"I really wanted to make the best of the chance I got from the last match, being down match point, so today was much better", Pliskova said after the match.

Eventually the home crowd had something to cheer as Brady got on the board, having lost the first four games of the match, but it was only a brief success as Pliskova fended off two break openings before taking the set.

World number ones Karolina Pliskova and Rafael Nadal have won through to the quarter-finals at the US Open in NY. "If there's some all-American matchups in the rest of the tournament, I think that says really good things about women's tennis". I think she was kind of nervous, and also, with the shadow, I think she just didn't feel well.

"I think my tennis is a little bit more complex than ... as simply as she put it", she added. But, you know, I think she served well. Obviously she has a big serve.

Rafael Nadal has advanced to the US Open quarterfinals with a 6-2 6-4 6-1 routing of Alexandr Dolgopolov.

And Keys joins Sloane Stephens, Venus Williams and Vandeweghe in the quarterfinals. I was lucky that I had an wonderful crowd and atmosphere.

Next up for the top seed is a first meeting with 19-year-old Russian Andrey Rublev who beat Belgian ninth seed David Goffin.

"I didn't expect this", said Kanepi who is ranked No. 418.

While Muguruza won't accumulate further points as she was ousted by Petra Kvitova in yesterday's session, the young Ukrainian Svitolina is still a threat, and she may face Pliskova in the semis. If she'll manage to pull out something special in NY she will make her reign even more legitimate.
