China recounts Pakistan's sacrifices against terrorism ahead of BRICS summit

A major threat to BRICS comity lies in tension between nuclear-armed China and India, who recently locked horns over a disputed Himalayan border region.

China may think it is "inappropriate" to bring up the issue of Pakistan's terror safe havens at the upcoming BRICS meet, but Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be "sure" to raise the subject, said a ministry of external affairs (MEA) spokeswoman on Sunday. However, there was so far no final word on a bilateral meeting between Mr Modi and Mr Xi on the sidelines of the Summit.Mr Modi will travel to Myanmar on September 5 for a three-day visit, his first bilateral visit to India's neighbour in the North-East.

China is concerned that Modi may raise the issue at the meeting because he did so at the Goa summit of BRICS previous year, accusing Pakistan of being the "mother-ship of terrorism". The 9th BRICS summit will be held from September 3 to 5. China also understands the significance of PM's Visit therefore just before the visit, it has reiterated that there is great scope for cooperation between both countries.

"We will also interact with the BRICS Business Council represented by captains of industry from all five countries".

BRICS is an informal association of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

The NDB Board of Directors approved four infrastructure and sustainable development projects in China, India and Russian Federation on Wednesday, with loans aggregating over US$1.4 billion.

"We will also look at strengthening our existing cooperation on security and counter-terrorism, trade and investment, skill development, infrastructure and energy, and culture", Modi said. While the Brics acronym is catchy, the Chinese translation means "gold bricks countries", which conveys confidence in the future, says the agency's report.

Modi had visited Myanmar's capital Nay Pyi Taw in November 2014 to attend the ASEAN summit. Apart from his engagements in the capital city of Nay Pyi Taw, he will also visit Yangon and Bagan and address the Indian community in Myanmar.

Jiang said the larger meeting would focus on deepening cooperation and promoting cultural and people-to-people exchanges, as well as enhancing institution building.
