Jordan Scarlett, Rick Wells make 10 Florida Gators suspended

Florida faces tough challenge of rebuilding stout defense

Florida Blue Uniforms

Just a day after star running back Jordan Scarlett met with reporters and said he was prepared for Florida to "put this game on my back", the team announced Wednesday that he and wide receiver Rick Wells have been suspended from team activities.

Of the two players suspended, Scarlett is obviously the far more important - he was Florida's leading rusher in 2016, and may be the Gators' finest offensive player, a workhorse back with great quickness and power who made a run at 1,000 yards on the ground a year ago despite sharing carries with several other backs.

According to CBS Sports, Gator wide receiver James Robinson and linebacker Ventrell Miller were cited with misdemeanor marijuana possession on Monday.

Scarlett and Wells join a list of suspended players that also include would-be starting wide receiver Antonio Callaway.

Florida now has suspended 10 players for at least the season opener.

New information came to light recently that Scarlett and Wells were also involved in the misuse of school-issued funds scheme that caused Callaway and six others to earn suspensions.

ESPN.com's Edward Aschoff reported the suspensions were due to players "making improper charges on their student IDs at the school bookstore and then selling those items for cash". Still, starting the season with so many disciplinary actions is not a good look for the program of McElwain, who is looking to build on the 9-4 mark Florida put up in his first season at the helm.

Scarlett, a junior, played in all 13 games for the Gators last season. It was a huge bump in playing time following a freshman season in which he toted the rock only nine times.
