At the press conference, Netanyahu praised Guterres for describing calls for the destruction of Israel as a "modern form of anti-Semitism" and said that, since Guterres took office at the beginning of 2017, he has shown a desire "to turn a new page in the relations between Israel and the United Nations".
Monday evening Guterres, accompanied by Netanyahu and Danon, will view an exhibition of Israeli innovations at Jerusalem's Israel Museum.
The Trump administration is not going to support a one-state solution that grants all of the region's residents equal citizenship rights, as such a proposal would jeopardize Israel's identity as a Jewish state (as opposed to a binational one).
Nabil Abu Rdeneh, spokesman for Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas, denounced Mr Netanyahu's comments and urged the United States to intervene.
The Palestinians received a boost from Guterres, who assured them the worldwide community remains solidly behind the goal of Palestinian independence and rejects Israeli settlements, which he called illegal and a "major obstacle" to peace.
Israel's President Ruby Rivlin also met with Guterres earlier in the day, and told Guterres that he must work to end the discrimination against Israel in the UN.
"Settlement activities represent a major obstacle in relation to implementation of the two-state solution", said Guterres in a press conference with Hamdallah.
His spokesman later clarified that he meant to say days instead of years, referring to the U.S. rally.
Nabil Shaath, a senior Palestinian official, said Monday that the Americans had asked for three to four months to conduct more preparations for a Mideast peace initiative. "This is something the United Nations should not accept", the Times reported.
Hamdallah called on the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump to define its position on the two-state solution, Israeli settlement and the implementation of global resolutions on the Palestinian issue.
This is something Israel can not accept.
He has also said Arab states in the Persian Gulf that were once enemies are now cultivating wider ties with Israel.
Guterres spoke after meeting Palestinian prime minister Rami Hamdallah in Ramallah following talks with Israeli leaders the previous day.
Guterres will then travel to the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, where the issue of a crippling electricity crisis will be on the agenda.
The UN last week announced $2.5 million would be released to meet the electricity and medicine shortages in Gaza which came about after Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas chose to cut supplies to the strip.
Israel and the USA are pressing for improvements to the force to combat what they say is the spread of illegal arms to Hezbollah-dominated southern Lebanon.
