Rohingya influx continues

Mass clashes in Myanmar: about a hundred killed

There are already 400,000 Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.

Witnesses and refugees on the Bangladesh border said last Sunday that the situation there was tense, with thousands of Rohingya trying to flee Myanmar but unable to leave.

The situation further worsened in Rakhine state's capital Sittwe.

Organized violence against the Rohingya, with the participation of government forces, has been underway since at least 2015, with spikes of intensity in 2016 and 2017.

The Myanmar government refuses to consider the Rohingya as a legitimate native ethnic minority and considers them as illegal immigrants who came from neighboring Bangladesh. Several women and children had to spend the night in a marshy area as they waited to cross over.

Bangladeshi border guards are turning people away in an attempt to discourage refugees from seeking safe havens in Bangladesh, he said, but many people are waiting near the border before attempting another crossing.

Lt. Col. Manzurul Hasan Khan of Border Guards Bangladesh said they cordoned off about 1,000 Rohingya after they attempted to enter Bangladesh. He calls his movement the "969" movement, where 969 is a historic Buddhist sign, referring to the nine qualities of Buddha, the six qualities of Buddha's teaching, and nine qualities of the Buddhist community.

In more recent months the group has become less publicly Islamic, changing its name to the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army.

ARSA took responsibility for attacks on eight police posts in October of previous year.

Still, more than 2,000 Rohingya entered Bangladesh overnight through two points at Teknaf in Cox's Bazar district, said Jalal Ahmed, a local government official at the Kharangakhali border point.

The army and the Myanmar's civilian government have vehemently deny allegations of widespread abuses including rapes and murders.

Bangladesh also pointed out that the terrorist attack and clashes occurred at a time when the Rakhine Advisory Commission, popularly known as Kofi Annan Commission, made recommendations towards durable solution for the Rakhine State.

ARSA has also taken responsibility for the coordinated attacks on 30 police outposts and an army base that took place on Friday.

Indeed, such an amendment would harmonise and further the commitment made by member states to uphold not only the Asean Human Rights Declaration agreed in 2012, but also other applicable worldwide human rights instruments, such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948, Cairo Declaration on Human Rights in Islam 1990, Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees 1951, Convention Relating to the Status of Stateless Persons 1954, as well as the Geneva Conventions 1949, which protect civilians and refugees fleeing state-sponsored violence.

A Director from Twe Let Myanmar, Aung Ko Ko, said, "We see this issue as a racial and humanitarian issue".

Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh told Monday how they fled for their lives from Myanmar's army as the United Nations refugee agency said more than 3,000 had arrived in the past three days. We are deeply saddened at the loss of lives among members of the Myanmar security forces. We hope that the perpetrators of these crimes will be brought to justice and we extend our strong support at this challenging moment to the Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.

Rakhine has been the scene of communal violence since 2012.

The visit to Myanmar will be the first by any pope to the country formerly known as Burma.
