Heat wave continues in Riverside County, along with poor air quality

Record Breaking Heat Coming

An excessive heat warning goes into effect Sunday morning as temperatures continue to rise across the Southland, creating an "elevated fire danger" that will extend into next week, according to forecasters.

Venice Beach can expect a heat wave to hit today, Monday, August 27th from 10 a.m.and linger until at least 10 p.m. Wednesday.

The heat wave is expected to peak today, and National Weather forecasters said temperatures would be 10 to 20 degrees above average.

The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning for East Bay Hills and the Diablo Range, Southern Salinas Valley/Arroyo Seco and Lake San Antonio-Santa Lucia Mountains.

Triple digital temperatures were expected for many locations with 110 being predicted for Brentwood, 108 for Walnut Creek, 107 for Livermore and Fairfield and 102 in Clearlake.

During the time of the warning, prolonged exposure to these temperatures will increase the risk of heat related illnesses, particularly for vulnerable populations.

The heat wave, which is being caused by a "goliath" high-pressure system moving south from northern Nevada to southern Nevada, already reached San Diego County's deserts on Sunday.

The NWS said it is certain that even coastal areas "will also warm significantly during this heat wave, with highs mostly in the 80s near the beaches and between 90 and 100 across inland portions of the coastal plain, including Downtown Los Angeles". Highs will once again be between 105 and 111 degrees. "The old record was 115 set in 2011". "Some heat related illnesses are serious enough to require hospitalization and could become fatal if left untreated".
