BREAKING: Twelve dead after Muslim militants storm police posts
Myanmar security forces were attacked by militants at many police and border outposts in the Rakhine state during the night and police have confirmed that 25 people have died.
The Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), a group previously known as Harakah al-Yaqin, which instigated the October attacks, claimed responsibility for the early morning offensive, and warned of more.
The latest attacks against government forces mark an escalation from a raid last October on a border security installation in northern Rakhine that killed nine security personnel.
During the crackdown, thousands of Rohingya fled to neighboring Bangladesh, complaining of systematic killings, arson and rapes by Myanmar military forces.
The government had been aware of the risk of attacks to coincide with the release of the Commission's final report yesterday and had issued instruction to relevant Union Ministers.
"We call on all parties to refrain from violence, protect civilians, restore law and order and resolve issues through dialogue and peaceful means", she said.
At least five policemen were killed when Muslim insurgents attacked 24 police posts in Myanmar'sRakhine state. "We have a zero tolerance policy - no one will be allowed", Hossain said.
Thousands of Rohingya Muslims escaping violence in Myanmar were trapped at the border with Bangladesh as new fighting erupted in restive Rakhine state.
Myanmar army sources said that today's attack was much stronger as compared to earlier attacks, which shows that the militants have become more organized and lethal.
"This is a legitimate step for us to defend the world's persecuted people and liberate the oppressed people from the hands of the oppressors!" the group said.
Several thousand Rohingyas are now occupying a four-mile stretch on the shore of the Naf River in Cox's Bazar's Ukhia, awaiting decisions from Bangladesh authorities. According to the Rohingyas and some scholars, they are indigenous to Rakhine State, while other historians claim that the group represents a mixture of precolonial and colonial immigrations.
The move, ARSA said, followed a two-week blockade by the authorities on food for Muslims in Rathedaung Township, and increased violence by the military in Rathedaung and Maungdaw against Rohingya communities.
Mohammed Shafi, who lives in a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh, said his cousin in Myanmar had told him by telephone "the military is everywhere".
"The government has directed to enforce the best efforts to stop any fresh influx", he said.
Mr Annan led global condemnation of the attacks, saying he was "gravely concerned".
